A bizarre crime caper unfolded in Dunedin, involving a cash machine, a forklift and a large tin of Milo.

Police were called to the car park of The Warehouse in South Dunedin on Sunday, about 5.50am, after a man was reported to be smashing a cash machine, Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said.

The 42-year-old had allegedly stolen a large tin of Milo from the nearby Pak ’n Save earlier that morning.

The man became incensed as supermarket workers watched him attack the cash machine, with him soon turning his attention towards them.

That led to workers closing the roller doors to keep themselves safe, Bond said.

While those doors were closed the man accessed the supermarket’s forklift which was in the car park and lifted up a nearby vehicle.

Police arrived and arrested him, with the man due to appear in the Dunedin District Court on Monday morning.

It was not the only eventful job in Dunedin for police over the weekend, with officers nabbing a 15-year-old boy with a penchant for speed on Sunday, about 5am.

The teen, who did not hold a driver’s licence, was recorded driving 136kmh in a 100kmh area.

Compounding his poor driving was that the teen driver was not wearing a seatbelt, Bond said.

He was forbidden to drive and issued infringements.

Police also were called to a party in Gladstone Rd in the Dunedin suburb of North East Valley, by an 18-year-old woman concerned by a teen gatecrasher.

The 18-year-old male was racist to fellow party goers while being asked to leave, Bond said.

He later returned to the address and smashed a glass door, before assaulting a male at the party by punching him in the head with knuckle dusters.

Police, who knew the identity of the teen, were yet to locate him, Bond said.

But police could solve a dispute between two green-fingered neighbours in Atkinson St, on Friday night.

A concerned 77-year-old woman contacted police after having a verbal argument with her male neighbour, also in his 70s.

The woman was accused of pulling the man’s vegetables out of his garden and he retaliated by leaving his garden waste on her doorstep, Bond said.

After the mess was cleaned up, the pair agreed to leave each other’s garden alone.
